Pewter Luckenbooth Brooches
also
Knotwork and Reproduction Brooches
Named such because
they were originally sold from "locked booths" in the
Royal Mile in Edinburgh in the early 1700s. Traditionally
exchanged by lovers on betrothal, with intertwining hearts.
The crown atop the hearts symbolizes Mary Queen of Scots. They were
later pinned to a baby's clothing to protect it from "evil
spirits." Many have been passed down for generations to
become valuable heirlooms. The Luckenbooth brooches remain the
most romantic and lovely brooch in Scotland's history.
